Strength of block joints welded with large gaps

The welding of block joints in shipbuilding often requires much
effort because fabrication without margins sometimes leads to
large gaps between blocks. The high stresses occurring due to
constraints may be unfavourable. For this reason, a project was
undertaken to investigate if butt joints welded with larger gaps
fulfil the requirements. The objective was the proof of sufficient
strength of welds fabricated with gap widths up to 30 mm.
